Isaac's Surgery Complication

As known, Isaac had his tonsils and adenoids removed on April 14th. The recovery period went well until 2 weeks after. His left tonsil site started to bleed off and on. We thought it was normal, just delayed and didn't think much of it and kept on eye on it. Well on a Monday he woke up with a blood crusted mouth and a pillowcase with spots. He seemed fine and said he was fine, but was just a little tired. So he went to school (since the bleeding stopped) and told his teacher to watch him and to call if he seems not right. Well about 2 hours later, the teacher called and said he turned ghost white and didn't want to join his classmates in music. So I picked him up. His color was fine and seemed like his normal self, until he got home and slept all day long. Called the nurse and she said it was normal and to watch him, like we have been. If it starts again, come in. No more bleeding. The next day, Tuesday, he woke up with no bleeding and was completely normal. All day he was fine until that evening when he started to bleed excessively. We took him in and they said it was normal and was due to the side healing too fast, blood counts were off, and gave us an antibiotic and sent us on our way. He still said he was fine. So the bleeding stopped until the early next morning, Wednesday. Isaac woke up around 5am, whiney and on his way to the kitchen. When Brandon got to him, Isaac coughed up blood clots. He then fell to the ground saying he was dizzy. He was ghost white. So we took him to the couch where he layed for a bit. I said something wasn't right and he needs to go in. Of course Brandon said "what will they do"...he always second guesses and it pisses me off to no end. So he left for work. A bit after he left, Isaac needed to use the bathroom. As he walked through the bathroom doorway, he passed out like a rag doll. He was WHITE and SWEATY. I immediately called Brandon and said he NEEDS to go to the ER...NOW!!! He came and took him in while I stayed home with the other kids. A couple hours later he called and said his sugar level was super high and they are doing tests, X-ray, and ordering a CT scan (to check for an abcess or blockage) and thinking he has some bacterial infection...and he has an ear infection too. CT scan came out clear and so did the X-ray. An hour later he called and said Isaac now has a room, been admitted. His blood count numbers continued to be way off but sugar went back to normal. Later in the day he got to have a Spinal Tap to rule out meningitis. That came out clear. So where the infection was, we don't know but glad they were being thurough. All day (and for the rest of the couple days he was there), they kept on doing blood checks and having him on IV fluids and bags of antibiotics. He had a fever off and on as well. Poor boy was a pin cushion, every 5 hours. Thursday, his white counts went back to normal limits but his hemoglobin kept on going down. So low (6.7) that he was a hair strand width from getting a transfusion. But with everything else coming out normal, something was off. So they thought maybe the IV fluid was diluting the blood. So the last overnight (Thursday into Friday) they kept on dropping the flow (which was high from him being in very rough shape Wednesday) and of that didn't work, then he needed a transfusion. That morning, Friday, the blood check came out GREAT and his color was coming back. So the fluids were diluting the blood and no need for a blood transfusion. The numbers kept on getting better and better. But he had a spot on his tonsil, which wasn't bleeding (and looked fine the day before) but poured when the ENT dr touched it. Sooooo that needed to be cauterized. After having that done, he got sick. So then, just in case, they upped the fluid flow, which then we knew it was the thing that threw off the numbers since it made the hemo go down again. As soon as he prooved he could keep down foods and liquids, we got to go HOME (since everything else was back to acceptable ranges).

The cause: His body took in so much blood from the troubled tonsil spot, that his body didn't know what to do with it or how to get rid of it. It then attacked his body and caused shock and stress and infection.

Now a week later, everything is healing normal, looks normal, and blood levels normal. He is ready to be back at school (after missing yet another week). He misses his teacher and friends/classmates. Between April 14th and now, he has missed so much school, its not even funny. 5 days for his post-surgery, 1 day (actually 3/4ths of a day) for bleeding issues, 2 days for hospital (luckily there was no school for that Friday), and 5 days for post-hospital. April/May was not school friendly.
